Links & Resources

Below are links to some of the resources I used while creating 'Juicy' as well as other work I've done. I believe its very important to acknowledge where you've received help from and without these websites, forums and tutorials, I wouldn't have been able to complete my video.

CG Society
A site that I first started using a few years ago, CGSociety is one of those sites that is constantly pushing me to raise my standard. It has introduced me to the massive amount of talented cg artists all around the world, creating some of the most impressive and beautiful works of art I have ever seen. Although not the only site to showcase art from 3d artists, its certainly one of the most popular and useful sites, offering an impressive and growing range of services. The site also has a very large forum, with interesting discussions from artists and people within the industry.

3D Total
The first proper 3d site that I ever went to, this was also the first site which actually introduced me to high quality 3d artwork. The site hosts a large variety of tutorials, all free and for some of the most popular cg software, as well as a large gallery, links to cg related events, reviews and more recently, a very vast selection of textures and a growing range of DVD tutorials. There's also a forum available as well as a place for people to look for jobs online. If your interested in the latest events, make sure you check out 3DTotal.

3D Buzz
One of the MOST useful sites I've ever come across, 3DBuzz hosts a large and by far the friendliest forums online. I've been a member for a few years, and have found detailed explanations to all my incredibly silly or complex questions. The site offers various tutorials for Maya, 3D Max as well as a lot of other programs, but I feel that its biggest strength is its forum. In fact, of all the 3d sites, perhaps because 3DBuzz is a lot smaller, I find it easier to get answers to my questions, with more people willing to go out of their way (with pictures and even videos - yes, someone answered one of my questions by making a video to explain it to me) to help you.

The Gnomon Workshop
Well known for one of the largest collections of DVD tutorials, The Gnomon Workshop has established itself as a very useful resource for artists - both 2D and 3D. The site offers a vast range of tutorial DVDs for almost all 2D and 3D software, and has tutorials for both beginner/intermediate as well as advanced artists. Although the newly created forums still need a lot more people to make it a good place to get answers to questions, the tutorials offered make it a very popular site. The site has recently started hosting a number of free tutorials which again, help show the high standard of the tutorials on sale.

NZ3D
A site for the New Zealand 3D community, NZ3D is, although extremely small, and not regularly updated, a useful resource for information, advice and feedback, as well as for finding cg related work within New Zealand.

Simply Maya & Simply Lightwave
Although not specifically used during the production of 'Juicy', both SimplyLightwave.com and SimplyMaya.com have proved to be of immense help over the years. I first found these sites when I had started learning 3d using Lightwave and found the free video tutorials explained the concepts clearly and in steps that made it easy to follow. And although there aren't that many free Maya tutorials available, I have bought a number of tutorials from both sites and most proved to be very useful. Both sites provide a wide range of tutorials, covering modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting and rendering and their payment system means you only have to download those tutorials you want. Definitely worth having a look at.

Desktop Images
A site mainly for users of Lightwave and those interested in video production, Desktop Images offers a number of tutorial DVDs featuring many well respected artists from the industry. I bought my first set of DVDs here and found them to be really useful in teaching me the different concepts of modeling, rigging, posing and animation principles. Although the tutorials haven't been updated for a while, the ones available are really useful and good for both beginners and those slightly more advanced.

Digital Tutors
A site well known to most beginners, DT provides a wide range of tutorial DVDs for almost all cg related programs. There's a large number of free tutorials, but most of these are previews to the ones you need to buy. The tutorials cover a range of topics and are more well known for those starting out, as most help in introducing concepts, menus and workflows for different programs. There's a forum available where questions can be posted, as well as a gallery and downloadable content.

Lost Pencil
Not functional as a tutorial site anymore, Lost Pencil still provides a range of outstanding services. The tutorials that were offered covered Maya, Lightwave and 3D Max and were for beginner to intermediate artists.

Ant Online
A well known and talented 3d gaming artist, Antony Ward's book, Game Character Development with Maya was used as a reference while creating Iris. His website includes some of his work and details of the services he provides.

Pixel CG
Hosting some very well made video tutorials for Maya and other programs, Pixel CG proved to be very useful when I was trying to workout render layers and occlusion passes.
